Guppy was a well known and civic minded person who joined the dover strafford (nh) fire department in 1859. In 1863 he enlisted as a private in the famous nh 5th infantry. Amazingly only a year later in 1864 he was promoted to lieutenant and agani in 1865 he was promoted to captain. It is truly rare fro an enlisted man to rise from private to captain in only two years!
We have included wiht this rare ambrotype captain guppy's military records as well as that of the illustrious new hampshire 5th infantry regiment. Few civil war regiments were as highly regarded as the nh 5th infantry who saw service at some fiercest battles such as malvern hill, antietam, fredericksburg, chancellorsville, gettysburg, cold harbor and the siege of petersburg just to name some! __________________________________________________________________________. In 1868 (at age 28) he wsa back in new hampshire serving as a newspaper publisher in dover. In 1870 he bought that same newpaper which is still published to this day and is known as foster's daily democrat! We have set a very olw starting bid. And a. Very low reserve!
