Idd Kia Union Infantry SergeantThis is an identified image of edgar post, co. F, 9th new york cavalry, killed in action at mt. Jackson, va, september 23, 1864. Post had previously been wounded in action juen 20, 1864. Post had enlisted in the 9th n. Y. Cavalry on sept. 16, 1861 at ashville, n. Y. He was mustered in as corporal on october 2, 1861 and promoted to sergeant, october 10, 1861. The image is a full-standing view of post in the photographer's studio in jamestown, n. Y. Teh card is backmarked mrs. M. F. Howe, jamestown, n. Y, a. J. Stiles, photographist. The card is period pencil signed at the bottom of the front, sergeant e. Post. Condition is very good although the corners are slightly rounded. Theer is normal age-browning. There are no creases or bends in the card. Contrast is excellent. The 9th n. Y. Cavalry was part of the cavalry brigade of the army of the potomac and participated in most of the major battles with the army of the potomac including winchester, gettysburg, spotsylvania, trevilian station and the appomattox campaign. It lost 3 officers and 60 enlisted men killed and 5 officers and 29 enlisted men died of wounds, and 32 officers and 238 enlisted men wounded/recovered. 139 men were recodred as missing. The regiment was led by col. William sackett who was wounded at trevilian station and died june 11, 1864. The 9th n. Y. Cavalry was composed mostly of men from western new york however, some were recruited in the new york city area.
